Abstract
Background: Medical students encounter great academic challenge and pressure which cause them prone to depressive and anxiety disorder compared with other students. Physical activity causes HPA axis changes by increasing ACTH and decreasing the production of cortisol, which have positive impact on mood. The association between physical activity and depressive and anxiety disorder is also explained by some hypotheses, such as endorphin, neurophysiological, thermogenic, distraction, and self efficacy hypothesis. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity and depressive and anxiety disorder on preclinical medical student. Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted on students of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine in academic year 2015/2016. Physical activity was acquired by GPAQ ver 2 and depressive and anxiety disorder were acquired by MINI ICD 10. Results: The result from chi-square test showed that there was no association between physical activity and depressive disorder (p = 0.316) and anxiety disorder (p = 0.496). Conclusions: This study suggested that there was no association between physical activity and depressive and anxiety disorder among preclinical students of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine in academic year 2015/2016. One thing that should be considered is the number of the respondents with depressive disorder in this study was very low, which could lead difficulties in finding the association between those variables. The inconsistent findings in prior studies about the association between physical activity and depressive and anxiety disorder indicates that meta-analysis study is needed for its certainty.
