Background :Hypertension can be caused by consumption of fast food. High content of energy, sodium, saturated fat, and trans fatty acid in fast food are known to cause blood pressure elevation. This study aims to determine the effect of types of fast food, including fried chicken, hamburger, hotdog, pizza, sandwich, spaghetti, french fries, chicken nugget, and western doughnuts, on increasing blood pressure. Methods :This study was an analytic study using cross sectional design with a total of 89 respondents out of students of Atma Jaya Catholic University Faculty of Medicine class of 2013. These respondents were chosen by total population sampling methode. Results :In this study, it is found that consumption of fried chicken, hamburger, hotdog, pizza, sandwich, spaghetti, french fries, chicken nugget, and western doughnuts had no effect on blood pressure elevation (p= 0,299, 0,158, 0,165, 0,552, 0,872). However, when the result is analyzed by type of fast food being consumed, it is discovered that individually two out of nine types of fast food that were put as options on questionnaire, such as french fries (p= 0,024) and chicken nugget (p= 0,070), have effect on blood pressure elevation, while the rest, such as fried chicken (p= 0,191), hamburger (p= 0,971), hotdog (p= 0,116), pizza (p= 0,875), sandwich (p= 1,000), spaghetti (p= 0,186), and western doughnut (p= 0,477), didn’t show any effect on blood pressure elevation. Conclusions :Consumption of fried chicken, hamburger, hotdog, pizza, sandwich, spaghetti, french fries, chicken nugget, and western doughnuts have no effect on blood pressure elevation, however consumption of french fries and chicken nugget have shown to elevate blood pressure. |
