Abstract
Introduction: Attention is defined as the ability to focus in an activity. There are
several external factors that could affect one's attention. The students of the faculty
of medicine have always had a high demand on studying whilst limited time is
available. A high/full attention is required for an efficient and maximum learning in
order to comprehend the study material thoroughly. Some researches proved that
gum chewing increases attention.
Objective: This research aims to study the effect of gum chewing towards the
attention on the student batch 2013 of Program Studi Sarjana Kedokteran
Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya.
Method: Experimental research was done to 50 respondents. These respondents
divided into two groups: 1.) Control and 2.) Experiment group. Each group
consisted of 25 respondents where their ability to pay attention was measured using
the "Stroop Effect" application for one minute pre test. As the intervention, control
group will rest for 5 minutes, while experiment group will chewing two pieces of gum
for 5 minutes and both groups continued with post test. Data processed and analyzed
with computer programme. The paired T test was used and stated that the result of
both groups increased.
Results: At the control group, 18 respondents (72%) gained an average increament
of 22,24 to 27,16 with a value of P=0,002 (P<0,05). On the other hand, 19
respondents (76%) of the experiment group gained an average increament of 22,96
to 26,84 with a value of P=0,002 (P<0,05).
Conclusion: Gum chewing does not have a significant effect on attention.
