BACKGROUND : Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with hyperglycemic condition. On 2014 in Indonesia there were 9 million cases of Diabetes and 175,936 people died. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the number of people suffering from diabetes mellitus will keep increasing, and by 2030 there will be 21,3 million people that suffer from diabetes mellitus. There was a research that says Dioscorea sp contains Diosgenin, a substance that affects blood glucose level. The aim of this research is to know the effect of Dioscorea esculenta to the decreasing of blood glucose levels in Sprague Dawley rats that was induced by Alloxan. METHODS : The study design was experimental in vivo. The sprague dawley rats were divided into 5 groups. The first group was given no medication, only induced by alloxan. The second group was given 100 mg/kgBW metformin as a positive control. The third, fourth, and fifth group were given 500 mg/kgBW, 750 mg/kgBW, 1000 mg/kgBW as the medication. This research was conducted for 3 weeks. The data were analyzed with SPSS using multivariate test general linear model. RESULT : The result showed that the data were normally distributed (p>0.05). After being analyzed with multivariate test general linear model, there are significant decreased level in the group that was given 500mg/kgBW, 750 mg/kgBW, 1000 mg/kgBW Dioscorea esculenta flour in 3 rd hour, 5 th hour, 5 th day, 10 th day, 14 th day of the intervention (p <0.05). The first hour measurement showed no significant decreasing of blood glucose level (p >0.05) CONCLUSION : This study showed that the intervention of Dioscorea esculenta 500mg/kgBW, 750 mg/kgBW, 1000 mg/kgBW could decrease blood glucose level 3 rd hour, 5 th hour, 5 th day, 10 th day, 14 th day of intervention. The biggest decreasing is caused by the intervention of 1000 mg/kgBW Dioscorea esculenta flour . |
