Background Scientific writing is one of the criteria to graduate from faculty of medicine, Unika Atma Jaya, Furthermore, scientific writing gives impact to one’s carrier in research, curriculum vitae and serves as a preparation for residency. Hence, it is important to assess the quality of medical student’s scientific writing. Objective The purpose of this study is to know the number of scientific writing done by medical students of Unika Atma Jaya class of 2006-2011 based on study design, quality and ratio. Methods As much as 50% of the scientific writings done by medical studetns from 2006-2011 per year were assessed. Then, it was assessed using a form developed from a series of Delphi involving ten lecturers in our institution. The results are then analyzed descriptively. Results Delphi was conducted three times with the level of agreement of 60% in the first round, 50% in the second round and 23,8% in the third round. The result is a form of 51 points that are categorized based on study design. The number of scientific writing published during the 6 years are 453 publications. Approximately 68,4% of the writing are considered “good”, 19,4% have “moderate” quality and 12,2% are considered “poor”. Study design that is mostly used in decreasing order are quantitative observational studies (49,4%), systematic review (40,6%), quantitative experimental studies (5,9%), case report (2,2%), qualitative study dan mixed method (each 0,9%), and meta-analysis (0%). Conclusion There is a significant difference on scientific writing by medical students. The current policy has addressed the quantity problem. However, the quality, variation in study designs and the level of analysis remains a problem and can be improved. One of the solution is to revise the learning method in Research Methodology block, especially in scientific writing training. Furthermore, publication of scientific writing in scientific journals should be made compulsory. |
