Abstract
Background : Bullying is a problem often found in adolescence and causes psychological impact. Adolescents with low self-esteem have a risk of being involved in bullying behavior.
Objective : To find the relationship between self-esteem level and the role of bullying behavior on students in junior high school Penjaringan region, North Jakarta Methods : This cross-sectional descriptive research was done on 1324 junior high school students in Penjaringan region, North Jakarta. This research was conducted by using secondary data from Olweus Bullying Questionnaire, demographic questionnaire and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (self-reported version). Analysis of this data is univariate, bivariate and multivariate. Results: There are 34.2% of respondents involved in bullying, 12.5% as victims, 11% as victim-perpetrator, and 10.7% as perpetrators. The type of bullying often found is direct verbal (28.6%) and the most common site of bullying found is in the classroom when the teacher was not present (18.1%). Chi-square test showed that there was a significant relationship between self-esteem with the role of bullying behavior. Logistic regression analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the role of bullying (offender; p = 0.002, Exp (B) = 2,340), (victim; p = 0.012, Exp (B) = 1,947), (victim-offender; p = 0.021 , Exp (B) = 1,911) and low self-esteem with a value of p=0.05. Conclusion: Self-esteem in adolescents plays a role in the occurrence of bullying behavior where someone can be involved as a victim, perpetrator, and victim-perpetrator.
