Abstract
Objective: Staphylococcus aureus is the most prevalent bacteria infection in skin, fibrous tissue, bloodstream and respiratory tract. Cinnamon is commonly used as spices and known to have benefit as antibacterial. Indonesia has peculiar Cinnamon called Cinnamomum burmannii (C.burmannii). Cinnamomum cassia (C.cassia) is the most well-known cinnamon from South China. Objective of this research is comparing the antimicrobial activity of C.cassia and C.burmanii against S.aureus.
Methodology: Extraction of Cinnamon was performed in ethanol 96% using soxhlet method. Crude extract was diluted in into various concentration (10,5,2.5,1.25,0.625 g/dl). Extract was tested against S.aureus. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity was performed by disk diffusion method.
Result: The result of C.burmannii’s inhibition zone was in 14,12,10,8, and 7 in mm, respectively and C.cassia’s inhibition zone was 15,13,11,9, and 8 in mm, respectively. Antibacterial sensitivity against S.aureus began in concentration of 2.5 g/dl in C.burmannii and 1.25 g/dl in C.cassia. Inhibition zone of C.cassia better than C.burmannii. Comparison of antibacterial activity between C.burmannii and C.cassia against S.aureus not significant statistically (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: This research indicates that C.burmannii and C.cassia have antibacterial activity against S. aureus, but not significant difference statistically
