Background. The academic writing skill is one of the most essential asset of any higher education student could possess. Currently, this skill is neither satisfying nor well-spread between students of the higher education; including those of Unika Atma Jaya. It is then a need to resolve this issue through the implementation of innovations. One of the proven innovation to successfully enhance the academic writing skill of students is through a peer-based consultation program under a writing center, also known as the Peer-consultant Writing Center (PCWC). Objectives. The aim of this research is to see the impact of this writing center pilot program towards both the consultants and the users. Methodology. This research used both the quantitative and qualitative approach. The quantitative approach was an experimental comparative analysis using the VALUE rubrics, KBK FPUAJ, TPB FPUAJ, KV FPUAJ, and DK FPUAJ as instruments. One way anova with repeated measures was used if the data fits a normal distribution pattern, else the Friedman with post hoc Wilcoxon will be used with a confidence interval of 95% (a = 0,05). The qualitative approach used an explorative descriptive approach with the constant comparative method. The whole research will take place from January 2015 until November 2015 and has involved students of both the medical and psychology faculties to be either trained and employed peer consultants (PC) or users for the consultations. Results and Conclusions. The research has shown that PCWC is a success as it benefits the students, both the PC and the users, by increasing both their abilities and competencies in academic writing. The increase of academic writing proficiency are most notably observed in the areas of problem solving, inquiry and analysis, information literacy, integrative learning, problem solving, verbal creativity, and reading comprehension. Beside a significant improvement in academic writing, developments are also noted regarding all-round thinking capability, academic interests, social skills and circles, and the sense of responsibility. Suggestion. It would be a waste if benefits from the PCWC couldn’t reach all the needful students of all faculties in UAJ. Therefore, PCWC must both be expanded and be established as an institute to further supplement the education of more students of UAJ in a sustainable manner. |
