Abstract
This study is based on the proposition that EFL learners tend to feel anxious when they have to perform speaking tasks in TEE (Teaching English in English) class. It seems that foreign language anxiety has negative impacts on EFL learners’ speaking skill. To overcome this, TEE was proposed by the Korean Ministry of Education in 2001. However the implementation of TEE has been highly controversial with the passage of time because of the issue of its efficiency even though students and teachers have embraced TEE classes with great interest. It is assumed that one of the affective elements that ill-affects Korean young learners’ speaking in TEE class is anxiety which could discourage them to speak English naturally. Therefore the anxiety in TEE class needs to be studied for the improvement of EFL learners’ speaking skill in Korea. The project investigates the extent of anxiety of elementary students in speaking in TEE classes and examines the factors that affect students’ anxiety in speaking in TEE classes. There are TEE teachers’ proposed strategies to reduce speaking anxiety in TEE class. For these purposes, 93 participants who have been instructed in TEE classes for three years in Geumgye elementary school in South Korea were surveyed using a questionnaire consisting of 25 Likert scale items to measure speaking anxiety. The close-ended questionnaire was analyzed by descriptive quantitative analysis using SPSS statistics 22 to investigate the extent of anxiety. Another open-ended questionnaire for three TEE teachers was distributed to investigate their strategies in reducing learners’ speaking anxiety in their TEE classes. The data was examined by qualitative analysis. The results of this study suggest that young learners felt speaking anxiety in TEE class and there were some factors that caused the anxiety in four dimensions such as communication apprehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation and comfort in using English. Some teachers’ strategies were proposed to help students cope with their anxiety in TEE class. Hopefully the findings of this study could contribute to the awareness of the speaking anxiety and effective strategies in TEE class.
