Abstract
This study focused on the ESP syllabus and the course book that are used at the Indonesian Police Language School (Sebasa) in Jakarta. The intensive English course at Sebasa is provided to the Indonesian police personnel to improve their English skills especially communication skills that are related to their daily tasks.
The research investigated to what extent the objectives outlined in the syllabus reflect the findings of the needs analysis and to what extent the contents of the course book meet the objectives outlined in the syllabus. Since the research tried to compare these ESP course components namely the needs analysis, the syllabus and the course book, this research used the framework of Friedenberg et al. (2003) to look into the design of those components first. This framework was used as the basis of principled criteria in conducting needs analysis, designing the syllabus and evaluating the course book.
The research was conducted through descriptive analytical interpretative by making use of document study. The findings of the need analysis, the syllabus and the course book were the main objects and the data sources of this research.
The findings show that to some extent the objectives outlined in the syllabus reflected the findings of the needs analysis. As for the contents of the course book, to some extent, they met the objectives of the course outlined in the syllabus. Detailed findings are provided including numbers and percentages for each unit of the course book. The research found some inconsistencies between the syllabus and the course book. The list is provided and suggestions were proposed. In addition, the research findings also suggested that the principled criteria used in conducting the needs analysis, designing the syllabus and evaluation the course book were carried out properly.
