Isi artikel
Fossilization has been a widely discussed topic accounting for a cessation of learning in spite of rich exposure to input, adequate motivation to learn, and abundant opportunity for communicative practice (Selinker, 1972, 1996). In this paper, we devote mainly to the use of “so”, which is thought to be overused by non-native speakers. Although 34 kinds of usage about “so” are given in Longman Dictionary and 14 functions in discourse are presented by Simone Müller (2004), the study, written text corpus-based, focuses on 4 basic functions of “so”: (i) Modifier (+adj.); (ii) Result or Consequence Marker; (iii) Substitute; (iv) Fixed phrases. Data are collected from both native English speakers and non-native English speakers. The study shows that the use of “so” as substitute and fixed phrases has statistic significance, while the use of “so” as result marker demonstrates no big difference between native and non-native speakers. This study indicates a relative fossilization in the usage of “so” as replacement and idiomatic constituent, which may further reflect an urgent need to improve instruction method towards discourse markers in cross-cultural communication.
