Isi artikelInformative texts are texts organized in phrases and paragraphs which aim at making an issue or an event known. Alternatively they aim at giving general information. Over a decade scientists have emphasized the role of informative texts in the improvement of children’s understanding and vocabulary enrichment. At the same time they emphasize the development of motives and the increase of children’s interest for reading. However, it is shown that such texts are not used in the Greek kindergartens nor internationally. In 2007 we designed a pilot study which aimed at testing the degree to which informative texts make a contribution to children’s language development (speaking, listening, vocabulary). Our study lasted 3 months and took place in 3 kindergartens in Thessaloniki’s Prefecture. 48 kindergarten pupils between 4, 5-5, 5 of age took part in the research. They were divided randomly in two groups. One formed the experimental and the other the control group. Our research was designed and applied in two time periods- an educational game approach was tested. Initially the kindergarten teachers filled in an observation test for each child. After that we applied the educational game approach and in the end we revised the initial observation test. The analysis of data shows that informative texts have a significant role in children’s language development.
