Abstract
Background: As the world of health care is developing, there are raising demands in the improvement of health care system to become more effective and efficient so the health workers need to improve their performance to be at their best. Health education institutions need to facilitate their students’ collaboration capabilities to produce an effective health care. Interprofessional Learning is a learning method that is being highlighted by the health education institutions to create good collaboration between health professionals. Interprofessional Learning teaches the health care profesion students how to collaborate between different professions to create a patient-centered health care system.
Method: This research is descriptive study using quantitative method approach. Participants of this research are students of Faculty of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (FKUAJ) and School of Health Science Sint Carolus (STIK Sint Carolus). Perception and collaboration capabilities of this research’s participants assessed using pre-test and post-test system. The instruments used in this research were Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS) questionnaire to assess perception and Team Observed Structured Clinical Encounter (TOSCE) to assess collaboration capabilities.
Result: In this study, there is improvement in perception of medical student (p=0.000) and nursing student (p=0.000). Students of STIK Sint Carolus have better perception than students of FKUAJ, both before and after the program. Students of FKUAJ and STIK Sint Carolus both have increased TOSCE scores but this increase is not significant (p = 0:47 and p = 0.38). Students of STIK Sint Carolus also have better collaboration capabilities than students of FKUAJ, but the difference is not significant.
Conclusion: Interprofesional Learning program improves FKUAJ and STIK Sint Carolus students’ perception about their collaborative capabilities. Medical students and nursing students have better assessment result after Interprofessional Learning program.
