Abstract
Background: Medical students’ low level of knowledge regarding influenza and influenza vaccination may affect in their attitude and practice. Therefore, an effective education method is needed to improve knowledge, attitude, and practice. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of a method, a study on retention is needed.
Objectives: This study aimed to describe the retention of knowledge, attitude, and practice in medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia within 20-24 weeks following peer-assisted learning on influenza and influenza vaccination.
Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. 38 medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia year 2013 and 2014 who had received peer-assisted learning on influenza and influenza vaccination and completed post test I in April 2015 took post test II in September-October 2015.
Result: There were significant differences between pre test and post test II in knowledge (50,82 ± 9,73 vs 60,50 ± 9,19; p < 0,001), attitude (68,76 ± 18,23 vs 74,84 ± 15,04; p = 0,038), and practice (66,58 ± 9,38 vs 42,11 ±17,88; p < 0,001) that proved retention. Significant differences were also detected between post test I and post test II scores (in percentage) in knowledge (79,71 ± 7,76 vs 60,50 ± 9,19; p < 0,001), attitude (86,89 ± 11,24 vs 74,84 ± 15,04; p < 0,001), and practice (66,58 ± 9,38 vs 57,37 ± 14,65; p = 0,001). The analysis showed that the mean of the retention of knowledge, attitude, and practice (in percentage of post test II score to post test I score) were 76,21 ± 11,47; 87,29 ± 18,43; and 86,89 ± 23,12 respectively. Retention of attitude and practice scores are higher than that of knowledge (p = 0,008 dan p = 0,040). There was no significant difference between retention of attitude and practice (p = 1,000).
Conclusion: Peer-assisted learning results in retention of knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding influenza and influenza vaccination within 20-24 weeks in medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
