Indonesia is effected by the global financial crisis the began in the United States, even through the effect has not been direct as banks and other financial institutions have not been exposed to the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the United States. This paper reviews the poverty situation in Indonesia in order to have a better understanding of how this crisis affects the poor, particularly the urban poor and what measures will need to be taken to lesen the effect on them. Our observation suggest that to combat poverty, the government needs to introduce parallel programs. One program is to tend for the poor and the other is to pull them out of poverty as well as to ensure that those who are already out of poverty will not slide back into it.
