Isi artikel
In 1997 India celebrates 50 years of independence. Over that period, according to UN estimates, it has seen life expectancy rise from below 40 years to above 60 and fertility fall from around 6 children per woman to just above 3. Its population has increased from 340 million to 960 million. The current (1996 revision) UN me- dium-variant projections show India passing 1 billion in 2000 and 1.5 billion by 2050; the low-variant projection peaks at 1.25 billion around 2040.
