Abstract
Background. The development of health through increased life expectancy and a reduction in mortality and birth rates led to an increase in the elderly population. According to WHO, in 2013 the population of older people in South East Asia was about 8% or 142 millions and projected to be tripled by 2050. This population growth results in the health transition and trend change to degenerative and chronical deseases, which are a combination of physical, pathology, mental, and disability problems. This situation can create a (new) community perception about old age, which leads to ageism, i.e. age-related social injustice and discrimination. Ageism may cause the loss of employment and social roles, even discrimination in public health service. Therefore, it is important to study the ageism of medical students towards elderly because in the future they will serve older people, whose population is increasing.
Objective. To figure out the knowledge and ageism of the students of the Medicine Faculty of UNIKA Atma Jaya (Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia) towards elderly and the affecting factors.
Method. This research is a cross-sectional study. The sample taken is 203 medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia batch 2012 with refusal from 3 respondents. The interview was conducted using two questionnaires: Fact on Ageing Quiz 1 to measure knowledge about ageing and Fraboni Scale of Ageism to measure the ageism toward the elderly. The received data was processed using univariate and bivariate processes. The analysis used is independent sample t-test. The hypothesis of this study is the relationship between the respondent’s background, experience with the elderly, knowledge about the elderly and ageing with the ageism of the respondents toward the elderly.
Results. The majority of the respondents are female, older than 21 years old, and had interacted with older people. The respondents know very well about the health of the elderly while the cognitive status, psychological condition and demography of ageing is still low. The ageism of the students is rather low, shown by a Mean FSA of 77.97, which is below the neutral attitude with a FSA of 86. The quality of the interaction with older people and the knowledge perception on older people affect the ageism. The factor of living together with older people increases the attitude of avoiding them, shown by the independent t-test of p value < 0.05.
Conclusions. The ageism is lower than neutral, however, needs to be minimise as it is worse than that in Western countries. The low ageism is related to the relationship quality. Students with more knowledge have less prejudice, avoidance, and discriminative towards elderly. The avoidance is related to the living place.
