Isi artikelThe language needs of non-native English speaking international students studying in Australia play an essential role in determining their adjustment in their first year of university study abroad. The overall aim of the study is to find out how we can assist and support the Hong Kong international students with their language needs so as to facilitate their first year overseas studies in Australia. The perspectives of the insiders – the students and their teaching staff are examined. The data on the preferences of the insiders mainly comes from interviews, supplemented by an overview of data on students’ liking for and confidence in using English in their studies as well as their daily use of English with friends and family. Support services to assist students with their roles as people, language learners and language users in their first year overseas study are discussed. Implications for English as a second language educators and program developers, university and students are presented.
