Isi artikelThe present paper shows the results of an investigation developed at the Faculty of Education (University of Granada, Spain), where undergraduate students following studies of Teacher Training (English) have been questioned so as to discover their level of motivation towards foreign language learning. Taking as a reference the investigation and research produced by R. C. Gardner, we notice how the attitude towards the foreign language (country and speakers) seems to be one of the more influencing factors in the students’ motivation. Following Gardner’s model, if the students develop negative attitudes towards the FL, its countries or its people, their general motivation to learn will diminish due to a lack of desire for integrating, while, on the other hand, if their motivation is positive, they will feel interested in learning and they will spend effort in it, thus strengthening their integrative reasons and increasing their motivation, as a consequence. This set of factors, together with other external aspects, will favour or impede success in foreign language learning. Gardner’s Socioeducational Model for Second Language Learning (1985) considers two kinds of variables with regard to motivation to learn a foreign language: the set of factors forming the desire for integration (Integrativeness) and the attitudes towards the learning situation. These two variables will shape the student’s motivation (interest, attention, effort and perseverance in learning), although other types of support can modify motivation as well, such as instrumental reasons or extrinsic reinforcements. Having in mind the variables proposed by Gardner (2002), we have produced a series of questionnaires that will try to measure the students’ motivation towards FL learning. We intend to discover: a) The attitude towards the culture and speakers of the Foreign Language. b) The attitude to the learning of the FL. c) The reasons and motives to study the FL (integrative or instrumental). d) The attitude towards the FL’s learning situation.
