Isi artikel
This paper reports on a study conducted with one hundred and fifteen teachers from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) schools in Malta. The study investigated the ways in which learner independence or autonomy is promoted at these schools and why these approaches might differ from those recommended in the literature. Language learning independence, which enables language students to self-direct their learning and engage in a focused and personally significant learning process, can be promoted with all types of language learners. However, teaching strategies must be determined by the strengths and limitations of the learning context and the needs and objectives of the learners. Data gathered from questionnaires and interviews highlighted several factors affecting the way teachers promoted learner independence. Several potential areas for improvement were identified, including the need for a clearer emphasis on transfer of learning and a negotiated approach to learner training. Implications for the professional development of language teachers are discussed.
