Abstract
Background
Communication and good relationship with other profession are needed to facilitate teamwork and interprofessional collaboration in order to give the best treatment for patient. Because there is only a few program for medical students to improve their communication skill, Interprofessional Learning was held in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (FKUAJ), Faculty of Medicine.
Method
Evaluation of IPL was conducted qualitatively. FKUAJ students attended IPL along with STIK Sint Carolus student. Qualitative data were collected from focus group discussion (FGD) and open-ended questions in Collaborative Practice Assessment Tool (CPAT) questionnaire. The FGD was conducted to the students and facilitators while the CPAT questionnaire was filled by the student. The data were analyzed by thematic analysis method.
Result
There were 3 factors that influenced students’ communication skills during IPL activities, which were technical, facilitator, and student factors. Technical factor was comprised of module and facilities, facilitator factor was comprised of the perception between facilitators and facilitator’s skill to facilitate and give feedback during IPL, and lastly, student factor was comprised of student characteristics and proportion.
Conclusion
Students felt a positive perception toward IPL and agreed that they get a great benefits from attending IPL. The benefits of IPL for medical students are learning about other profession job description, giving new insight on the role of other healthcare workers, motivate student to improve their skills, working together with other healthcare profession in a team, experience the real hospital situation, learning the importance of communication, and get an opportunity to improve communication skill.
