Abstract
Mangroves have important ecological and economical roles for the environment, but their existences at Surabaya shores near Suramadu bridge are threatened by various factors i.e., land conversion, pollution and that bridge existence, so that it needs efforts for monitoring the changes at that place. The purposes of this research were to identify the diversity, domination, and zonation of mangrove community in the area of Suramadu bridge at Surabaya. Data’s were taken using belt transect method, by making a line transect perpendicular from shore line. Five transect plots were then made in series with each plot measuring 10 x 10 meters square to the criteria of tree, 5 x 5 meters square to sapling criteria, and 2 x 2 meters for seedlings criteria. In each plot was identified species, stem diameter of each stand of mangroves and the number of individuals of each species of mangrove. The datas were analyzed using Mueller and Dumbois formula to obtain the value of density, dominance, frequency, and importance of the plant. Shannon Weaver index and dominance index by using Simpson’s formula were calculated to obtain an diversity index. The results showed that it was found seven species of mangrove that composed the vegetation and it consisted of four different families of mangroves plant: Avicenniaceae (Avicennia marina and A. alba), Sonneratiaceae (Sonneratia alba), Rhizophoraceae (Rhizophora stylosa, R. apiculata and R. mucronata) and Meliaceae (Xylocarpus molucensis). The highest importance to criteria was existed on Avicennia marina (235,68%). Mangrove diversity in this area was low (1.1) and it was dominated by A. marina. Mangrove zonation from coastline to land in a row respectively are A. marina, S.alba and A. alba. Rhizophora stylosa and Rhizophora mucronata at midzone. Xylocarpus molucensis and Rhizophora apiculata at zone bordering land. The low diversity and distribution pattern was influenced by physical and chemical condition that relatively same in sampling area and tolerated by mangroves for growing and developing.
