The stagnant South Maluku Republic (RMS) secessionist movement received more exposure than they could have ever anticipated when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono decided to cancel his trip to the Netherlands early last month. The media coverage generated by the SBY’s cancellation belies the fact that the group lacks widespread or cohesive support among local Maluku people. It is hard then to comprehend why the state feels the need to act so oppressively towards the group. Doing so only ends up strengthening the group’s resolve while at the same time undermining Indonesia’s claims to being a free and open democracy.
