Isi artikelMid-October saw Constitutional Court Chief Justice Mohammad Mahfud once again publicly call for the introduction of capital punishment to strengthen Indonesia’s battles against graft. Mahfud claimed that the death penalty in China had been very successful in reducing corruption in the country and urged Indonesia to follow their lead. While calls such as these might receive broad popular support, they are unlikely to result in changes to Indonesia’s anti-corruption laws. Given the battering Indonesia’s human rights record has received over recent months, this can only be a good thing. Tighter enforcement of existing regulations and policies such as clemency bans and asset seizures would be far more effective deterrents.
