Isi artikelDin Syamsuddin, who has just come off his re-election as chairman of Muhammadiyah and also currently serves as the deputy chairman for Indonesian Council of the Ulema (MUI), spoke recently at a buka puasa, or breaking of the fast, at the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club. Pak Din made use of the forum to expound on the role of Muhammadiyah in reducing ‘moral illiteracy’ in Indonesia, his own encounters with radical groups, and the failure of the government—President Yudhoyono and the National Police, specifically— to combat radicalism. Though he has been criticised for becoming too involved in politics— most notably with his support of Jusuf Kalla’s unsuccessful bid for president in 2009—Pak Din shows no signs of keeping out politics in the run-up to 2014.
