Abstract
Background
Every student in Indonesia is obligated to produce minimum one writing which is published by scientific journal as one of the requirements to graduate from the university. It is to improve the quality and quantity of Indonesia’s scientific articles. School of medicine at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia includes a program called Medical Writing and Presentation (MWP) in the first semester. This program introduces the students, skills in writing scientifically.
Method
Evaluation of MWP program was performed by quantitative and qualitative research methods. Analytic descriptive was used to analyze results of the voting before and after journal reading. A Paired T-test then was used to compare the first and last score of the students’ assessment. Qualitative data were collected from students’ reflective writings. The data were analyzed by constant comparative method (CCM).
Results
Students’ voting showed shifted opinions about the topics after journal reading. Students’ scores also improved significantly. Qualitative analysis of the reflective writings showed that MWP program was beneficial for the students. Not only did this program teach about things students need in their learning process, but also soft skills. Students planned to continuously improve and practice what they learnt from the program.
Conclusion
MWP program was beneficial and likeable by students. It effectively taught about EBM, references writing by Zotero, and soft skills. It also very efficiently introduced
speed reading to students.
