Isi artikelGeothermal energy has long been touted as a potential solution for Indonesia's electricity crisis. Yet in spite of the huge potential located within the country, the sector is chronically underdeveloped: only 3 percent of Indonesia's electricity supply comes from geothermal sources. High exploration costs and lack of clarity in the tendering process continue to be major deterrents for investors. Incentivising PLN to buy energy from renewable sources and addressing these challenges will be essential if geothermal energy is to compete with coal fired power, which remains a far cheaper alternative.
