Despite a global economic recession that sent airlines worldwide into the red and EU ban, Indonesian airlines are expanding their domestic and international routes, reporting passenger growt, and ordering new loads of new planes. What explains the recent success? The resilience of the Indonesian economy certainly helped, as did Indonesian low cost carriers, and a lack of competition from other modes of transportation. But looking forward to the ASEAN Open Skies Agreement, Indonesian airlines must ready themselves for competition from their well-established neighbours, and must not neglect safety.
