The recent deadly explosions of LPG canisters come amid an otherwise successful government program of kerosene to LPG conversion. But the explosions and the government’s response have caste strong doubts on the capacity of the government to ensure that LPG can be used safely. Instead of implementing quick fixes and forming ad-hoc committees, the goverment must institutionalise LPG education programs, keep faulty and substandard products off the market, and take full responsibility for all aspects-including safety-of the concersion program.
