Abstract
Introduction
Candida albicans is a commensal fungus in humans. However, in certain circumstances, C. albicans can cause not only a skin surface infection but also a systemic infection that might cause a life-threatening condition. Many of over the counter antifungal does not always solve the existing problem. Some synthetic drugs might also cause some side effect and resistance. Nowadays, back to nature lifestyle continuing to growth among society, especially Indonesian, therefore encourage researchers to find a natural alternative drug. Some researchers found that C. xanthorriza have some antifungal components that can be used as an active component of alternative drug. This study aims to determine the antifungal activity of C. xanthorizza against C. albicans.
Methods This research is experimental in vitro by disc diffusion method. This study will compare the inhibitory zone C. albicans in the test group with essential oil of C. xanthorizza with various concentrations, that is 0.25%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%. against C. albicans positive control in Sabouroud Dextrose Agar
Results Data processing was performed using the computer software and One-Way ANOVA followed by LSD Post Hoc analysis. C. xanthorriza rhizomes essential oil has antifungal activity at a concentration of 0.25%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%. The greater concentration of C. xanthorriza rhizomes essential oil, the greater diameter of inhibitory zone will be.
Conclusion C. xanthorriza has antifungal activity against C. albicans in vitro by disc diffusion method. A test group with a concentration of 0.5% shows the optimum effect.
