Abstract
Background College students only get 6-6,9 hours of sleep during night time in average with sleep quality disturbance and nonfulfilling sleep, while medical school students in fact have shorter sleep than the average duration of college students in general. Shortage of sleep duration and sleep quality condition is affected by sleep hygiene practice awareness among college students in general.
Method The research design is an analysis comparative in a cross-sectional study. The respondents of this research are 120 under-graduate students of Faculty of Medicine Unika Atma Jaya. Respondents filled Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) questionnaire to assess sleep hygiene practice and Pittsburgh’s Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality.
Result 55,83% respondent has poor sleep quality shown by disturbance on daytime activites and short sleep duration (M=5,72 hours) with highest subscales. The most influencing sleep hygiene subscales are do something that may increase alertness before sleeping and use their bed for things other than sleeping. First year students have worst sleep quality score on average among three batch, and also highest sleep hygiene score. There’s association between sleep hygiene practice and sleep quality is proven in this study (p= 0,000, 95% CI).
Conclusion This study result indicated that there’s significant association between sleep hygiene practice and sleep quality among Faculty of Medicine Unika Atma Jaya under-graduate students.
