Abstract
Candidosis is one of world’s health problems shown by an increase of number of cases by 207%. One of the causes of candidosis is Candida glabrata. C. glabrata is a non-Candida albicans species which is resistant to several kinds of antifungal agents, thus C.glabrata is called as azole-resistant yeast. Nepenthes rafflesiana is a carnivore plant that has a pitcher containing fluid suspected to have an antifungal effect.
Goal. The purpose of this study is to know the effect of N. rafflesiana’s fluid from fresh-opened and closed pitcher in several concentrations, so that it can be used as an alternative therapy to candidosis.
Method. This is a laboratory experimental study using two methods, disk diffusion test and macrodilution test.
Result. The disk diffusion test result shows that there is no inhibition zone was formed by both types of N. rafflesiana’s fluid. However, macrodilution test result shows a decrease in colonization growth of C. glabrata by N. rafflesiana’s fluid from either fresh-opened or closed pitcher in 20%, 35%, 50% concentrations.
Conclusion. This indicates that N. rafflesiana’s fluid has an antifungal effect against Candida glabrata’s growth.
Suggestion. Molecular research of N. rafflsiana’s fluid from fresh-opened and closed pitcher.
