Background : Diarrhoea in children is a serious health problem in developing countries such as Indonesia. The decline of diarrhoea mortality rate from 11,4% (1995) to 7,4% (2001) has not been achieved in conjunction with a significant decline of diarrhoea incidence, which only declined from 1.330 cases (2006) to 1.310 cases (2010) per 1.000 children under five years old. This shows that the treatment of diarrhoea in Indonesia is now adequate, while the efforts to prevent diarrhoea is still inadequate. Methods : This research used a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach on mothers with children under five years old who visited the Community Health Center in the district of Kelapa Gading. Respondents were given questionnaires about the knowledge and behaviours to prevent diarrhoea. Result : From 57 respondents in total, 24 (42,11%) have a good knowledge regarding the prevention of diarrhoea, and 37 (64.91%) have good behaviours regarding the prevention of diarrhoea. There is a marked difference between the knowledge and behaviours of mothers based on education and family income. Mothers with higher education and family income show higher knowledge and better behaviour, compared to mothers with lower education and family income. Conclusion : Mothers in the district of Kelapa Gading have good behaviours regarding the prevention of diarrhoea, but don’t have a good knowledge regarding the prevention of diarrhoea. |
