Abstract
Background. Candida krusei is the most common cause of candidemia-related-mortality. C. krusei's resistance toward fluconazole has also been found. Nepenthes rafflesiana is a carnivorous plant originating from Kalimantan that has the ability to catch and kill insects by exuding various substances within its sac. Kitinase, naphtoquinone, plumbagin, droserone, and 5-O-methyl droserone all have antifungal effects.
Goal. This study aims to test the effectivity of N. rafflesiana fluid from open pitchers compared with fluid from closed pitchers as antifungal treatment.
Method. The method utilized in this study is disk diffusion and macrodilution with concentration of 20%, 35%, 50% repeated in three trials.
Result. No inhibitory zone in the C.krusei culture which has been treated with N. rafflesiana from closed pitchers and opened pitchers using the disk diffusion method. Nevertheless, through macrodilution, the antifungal effect of N. rafflesiana fluid from open(p=0,037) and closed pitchers(p=0,037) is significant at the concentration of 50%. N. rafflesiana fluid from open pitchers has no difference in antifungal effects on the growth of the C. krusei colony when compared with the fluid originating from closed pitchers.
Conclusion. Concentration of 50% from open and closed pitchers of N. rafflesiana fluid have significant antifungal effect.
Suggestion. Future studies may investigate the effect of N rafflesiana's age on its antifungal activity, the purification of active substances in N. rafflesiana, and using other pathogenic fungi as a research material.
