Abstract
The large population and the rapid population growth are apparaent problem in developing countries, such as Indonesia. Birth rate, maternal and child mortality rate are high. A program such as KeluargaBerenca (KB) aims to overcome this. Intrauterine Device CopperT is an effective birth control method with a high success rate. Notably, CopperT IUD may cause bleeding as its side effect and is the main reason for discontinuation of its usage. This study aims to examine the relationship between IUD CopperT use and incidences of menorrhagia or Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB) in mothers of childbearing age.
Methods: The study was conducted using descriptive analytic method with a cross sectional approach. Respondents in this study consist of 58 people, 33 people being IUD CopperT users and 19 people are not IUD CopperT users. A questionnaire was used in this study. Menorrhagia assessment carried out using the Pictorial blood assessment chart (PBAC) on one menstrual cycle and interpreted with the Higham et al. system Higham chart. Menorrhagia is noted when the score exceeds 100, which also means that hemorrhage levels exceed 80ml per menstrual cycle.
Results: The use of IUD CopperT has a significant relationship with the occurrence of menorrhagia (p <0.05). IUD CopperT users have 9,429 times greater risk of experiencing menorrhagia. While the duration of IUD CopperT usage (p = 0835) and Body Mass Index (BMI) (p = 0:39) has no significant relationship to the occurrence of menorrhagia.
Conclusions: The use of IUD CopperT is associated to the incidence of menorrhagia. There is no relationship between duration of IUD CopperT used to the occurrence of menorrhagia and there is no relationship between BMI to the occurrence of menorrhagia.
