Background. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the category of non-communicable diseases. The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in cardiovascular disease is associated with the consumption of fast food which could possibly affect total cholesterol levels in an adolescent, that could be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease Objectives. The aim of this study is to determine the association between the frequency of fast food consumption with total cholesterol levels in adolescents. Methods. The study was conducted using cross-sectional method that was performed at the Medical School of Atma Jaya. Random sampling was used with 65 respondents participated. Respondents were given questionnaire and their total cholesterol levels were measured. Mann Whitney U analysis was used to find out the relationship between fast food consumption with total cholesterol levels in adolescent. Results. Majority of respondents are female ( 58,46 % ), at age 18 years old (53,85%). Majority of respondents often consume fast food (69,23%) and their mean total cholesterol levels are at 224,51 mg/dL. Mann Whitney U test analysis showed a p-value < 0.05 ( 0.000 ) in association between fast food consumption with total cholesterol levels . Conclusion. There is a significant association between fast food consumption with total cholesterol levels in adolescent, that the more frequent adolescents eating fast food, the higher their total cholesterol levels. |
