Abstract
Background: The elderly population comprises the fastest growing segment of the world's population. The number of cases of non-malignant chronic pain in the elderly increases with increasing life expectancy of the elderly. Elderly often suffer from pain when visit a doctor. An analgesic as therapy is often given by doctors in managing of non malignant chronic pain in the elderly. Pharmacokinetic and metabolic changes associated with increased age makes the elderly vulnerable to side effects and overdosing associated with analgesic agents. Lack of knowledge and attitude of health center doctors on analgesic as theraphy of pain may worsen the elderly and affects the quality of life of the elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to obtain the knowledge and attitude of health center doctors on analgesic as the treatment of non-malignant chronic pain in the elderly in North Jakarta.
Methods: The method of this study was a descriptive analytic - cross sectional sample used was the entire North Jakarta Health Center doctors who met the inclusion criteria. The numbers of respondents were 55 doctors. This research was conducted in July-August 2015 by using questionnaires as the research instrument.
Results: From the results obtained showed the percentage of physicians who had good knowledge on analgesics as the treatment of non-malignant chronic pain in the elderly by 21.8% and 43.6% had a positive attitude. There was no significant correlation between knowledge with age (p = 0.516), sex (p = 0.284), the year of graduation (p = 0.211), in practice (p = 0.178) and joined the seminar (p = 0.158). There was no significant correlation between attitude with age (p = 0.262), sex (p = 0.345), the year of graduation (p = 0.460), in practice (p = 0.404) and joined the seminar (p = 0.112).
Conclusion: Knowledge and attitudes of health center doctors on analgesic still lacking. This was influenced by many factors, such as lack of continues education on the management of non-malignant chronic pain in the elderly in accordance with the current update. Lack of knowledge and attitude in analyzing of chronic pain in elderly affect the management. There were limitations analgesic drugs to deal with chronic pain in the elderly in Puskesmas that affect physician attitudes.
