Abstract
This research is based on the problems occurred in XYZ company, a company which manufactures electronic equipments, the percentage of defect and operator turnover rate are both high. These problems would cause loss for the company so it is necessary to identify the root of the problem and find the best solution. These problems are caused by the unoptimal workload, especially the mental workload. This mental workload affect the productivity of operators who work on the production floor. It is necessary for measuring mental workload as a reference to determine the number of operators so that each operator would receive optimal mental workload and we could avoid over workload which cause stress and avoid under workload which cause idle. The mental workload measurement will be conducted on 44 operators which are spread among 17 work stations. The mental workload measurement will be calculated using NASA-TLX method and then proceed the calculation to determine optimum number of operators for each work station . Based on the data assessment, the average of operators’ mental workload is 53.45. There are three work stations, work station C, F and P, which had over workload (for lacking number of operators) and there are two work stations, work stations A and I, which had under workload (for exceeding number of operators). The disadvantages for lacking number of operators are the increasing of defect percentages, turnover rates and fatigue. While the disadvantages for exceeding number of operators are idle time, morale decreasing and inefficiency operator. The best solutions for the problem are operator mutation and non finacial compensation.
