Isi artikelApologies are speech acts that are intended to remedy an offence committed which aimed to maintain social harmony between interlocutors. These apologies can be realized through varies linguistic strategies. The act that requires an apology and the preference for apology strategy choice varies contextually and cross-culturally. The purpose of this study is to identify the situations that require an apology in the Indian society and explain in detail why certain behaviours are considered as offensive as well as analyze the apology strategies applied by the respondents in order to obtain information on the role of social distance and the social power in the Indian culture. In addition, the data will also assist interlocutors by avoiding situations that requires an apology in the Indian society in their attempt to maintain social harmony in an intercultural communication. To achieve this purpose, a Discourse Completion Test is used to gather data on the type of offence that requires an apology in the Indian society, as well as identify the strategies selected by the respondents with the intention of rectifying the offence committed and analyze the interdependent of the apology strategy choice with social distance, social power and severity of offence in the Indian society. This study adopts Brown and Levinson’s Theory of politeness (1987) as its theoretical framework together with Meir’s(1995) ethnographic approach which would be able to identify the expectations on how interaction and negotiation should take place in intercultural communication is contextually and culturally informed. Findings of this study is aim to provide an insight and understanding of cultural diversity and emphasize the need for Malaysians to avoid situations that are considered as offensive by the various ethnic groups in order to communicate competently in a multiracial community. Furthermore, the findings may also stimulate the need for teachers to be culturally aware of the language they are teaching and they must be conscious of cultural diversity in multicultural and multilingual societies. They should also be aware of Sources and Techniques for Cultural Content as well as useful techniques for teaching language and culture.
