Isi artikel
In recent years, conferences as well as books and articles, frequently refer to developments in the field of ‘corpus linguistics’. An increasing number language teaching materials now claim that the content is ‘corpus-based’ or ‘corpus informed’. Indeed, corpus informed texts both written and oral are becoming the basis of the compilation of dictionaries, references grammars and coursebooks. However, the growing use of corpus linguistics does not mean the implications of such findings have entered into language teaching. This presentation is not about what a corpus tells us and therefore what we should teach. It is more about a ‘raising of awareness’ of what is a possible future direction for language teaching, especially in Southeast Asia. The use of language goes far beyond the function of communicating with its native speakers but rather involves the realization that the native speaker is no longer the norm-provider in the context of English as a world language.
