Abstract
Background: The function of shoes is to protect the feet and provide comfort while walking. Most women wear incorrectly sized shoes because they didn’t do somemeasurements when buying shoes and enhancing fashion rather than comfort. Using incorrect shoes can cause foot pain, ulceration, thickening of the skin (corn and callus), as well as deformity of the foot (bunion and hammer-toe).
Purpose: The aim of thisstudy is to determine the effect of feet shapes, flat shoes styles and shoe size towards foot comfort in female medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia class 2012.
Method: This study is an experiment research using two models of flat shoes to 35 female medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia class 2012. The study was held in September to October 2015. Data analysis performed using Chi-Square and McNemar method with p=0.05.
Results: 27 respondents (77.1%) felt comfortable after using flat shoes A, while 26 respondents (74.3%) felt uncomfortable after using flat shoes B. The results show between feet shapes and foot comfort (p=0.689 and p=0.275), between correct sized shoes and foot comfort (p=0.278 and p=0.929) so there are no correlation between those variables. There is a significant differences in foot comfort after using flat shoes A and B (p=0.000).
Conclusion: The use of flat shoes A provide more comfortablein female medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia class 2012 compared to flat shoes B.
