Abstract
Background. The success of national development has brought about an increase in life expectancy. The effect of this increase is the escalation of the elderly population. In 2050, the elderly group reaches 21.4% of the total population; thus, it is necessary to know the actual attitude of students toward the elderly due to the fact that these
students will be the ones who take care of the elderly patient group that continues to grow in numbers in the future.
Aim. To know the description of the knowledge and attitude of the students of the Faculty of Medicine of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia toward the elderly and the factors that affect it. Methodology. This research is a cross-sectional study utilizing questionnaires distributed to 203 fourth-year medical students (3 respondents refused). This
questionnaire consists of questions about the respondent’s background, knowledge about ageing, attitude toward the elderly, and intention. The questions on knowledge
are based on the Facts on Ageing Quiz 1 (FAQ1) and those on the attitude toward the elderly are based on the Geriatric Attitude Scale (GAS) from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). A quantitative (chi-square analytical test) and qualitative discussions were conducted to know the description of the attitude toward the elderly.
Result. Most of the respondents are female ageing 21 years old from the middle and upper middle class, and have previously interacted with the elderly. The knowledge
of the respondents about ageing is low (44%) and the attitude of the respondents toward the elderly is positive (GAS = 3.37). The factor of the presence of perception
that religion affects attitude, the level of interaction with the elderly, and the quality of interactions with the elderly affect a more positive attitude toward the elderly, with a p value of less than 0.05 using the chi-square test. The intention to continue their studies in gerontology and work in the elderly wards is very low (5% and 51.5% respectively).
Conclusion. The knowledge of the respondents about ageing is low (44%). Only the knowledge about the elderly health is high. This indicates the need of knowledge elevation efforts about ageing and the elderly from the social and other aspects. Overall, the attitude of the respondents toward the elderly is positive. This is related with the level and the quality of interactions; therefore the study method through
direct interaction with the elderly can be sought. In addition, a more positive attitude shows more desire to continue one’s study in gerontology and work in the elderly wards. Thus, an increase in positive attitude is needed for a larger number of
healthcare workers focusing on the geriatry field to ensure an adequate caregiving of the elderly despite the continuing increase in the number of the elderly
