Abstract
Background : WHO stated that the incidence of dental plaque is quite high. Xylitol can reduce the incidence of dental plaque which are found in gum. Consumption xylitol gum can increase pH of saliva.
Aims : To know the effect of chewing xylitol gum on dental plaque formation in the mouth.
Methods : This study is experimental research with pretest posttest design. This study using 30 female students were divided into 3 groups. Each group consists of 15 female students. Control group is used as group II. The group I and group II chew 1 piece of xylitol gum for 15 minutes and 30 minutes. A week later, the group I and group II chew 2 pieces of xylitol gum at the same time.
Result : The result between duration of chewing gum 15 minutes and 30 minutes with 1 piece of xylitol gum is p=0,000. The result between duration of chewing gum 15
minutes and 30 minutes with 2 pieces of xylitol gum is p=0,000.
Conclusion : Xylitol increases pH of saliva also decreases value of dental plaque index. The most effective result of this study is chewing 2 pieces of xylitol gum for 15 minutes.
