Abstract
Background:As we get older, the elderly will undergo degenerative processes that affect the quality of life of the elderly. One of the most frequent symptoms for elderly is short term memory loss. The fact that low sleep quality affects the increase in the incidence of cognitive impairment, howeverthere was still a few studies that disscuss in details about other factors that low sleep quality can affect. This study determined whether there was an association between short term memories, age, gender, and history of diabetic on short term memories in the elderly.
Methods: The research method was a cross-sectional analytic study, conducted on 50 respondents in the Kelurahan Cideng, Central Jakarta used Pittsburgh Sleep
Quality Index Test to measure sleep quality and Word List Memory Immediate Recall to measure short term memory.
Results: According to the research there was a significant association between sleep quality on short term memory with the ? value = 0.001 (? = 0.05) and OR = 8,050.
Correlation calculations were also performed by multivariate logistic regression test. The result found age and history of diabetic also affect short term memorieswith ? values were 0.026 and 0.020.
Conclusions: There was an association between the lowsleep quality, age and history of diabeticwith the decline of short term memory in elderly women and men. Elderly with a low sleep quality have 8 times greater risk of impaired short term memory.
