The existence of underwater cultural heritage enables us to open a window to the unknown past and enrich their understanding of history. Our recent technologies have allowed us the recovery of many artifacts from the sea including by private salvors who often retrieve artifacts from shipwrecks to sell them. Moreover, not all salvors conduct proper scientific inquiry, conserve artifacts, and publish the results of the research to the public and states. In international level, there are wide agreements that which regulates archaeological and their treatment. With regard to underwater cultural heritage, the need for appropriate management frameworks has become pressing because the technological progress has allowed unprecedented accessibility to the underwater cultural heritage, thereby increasing the risk of damage and destruction since the activities. Since underwater cultural heritage is an important component of cultural heritage in the world for mankind, it receives general protection under a series of international law instruments. |
