Isi artikelThis research was designed to create students’ empathy to the characters in short stories in order to develop their appreciation to literary works at English Education Study Program of PGRI University Palembang Indonesia. Involving thirty respondents, the investigation was conducted from March 18th to June 24th 2010. Using different short stories in each meeting, the students were guided to use their imaginations and empaty in responding to literature. The class was conducted through discussions and writing analysis of students’ appreciation. The findings suggest that female students are better in creating empathy in responding to literature compared to male student, using personal experience especially the similarities and differences to the characters in the stories make students are able to use their empathy in responding to literature and students are better in literary appreciation when they use empathy in responding to literature.
