Isi artikelForeign Language (FL) instructional settings are characterized by restricted input. In fact, foreign language learning (FLL) classrooms do not provide enough conversational practice, regardless of how communicative and learner-centered they are. Inescapably, these drawbacks have resulted in students’ pragmatic failures. Given this limitation, the role of explicit pragmatic instruction becomes even more important in FL classrooms where opportunities for the full range of human interactions are limited. Number of studies show that pragmatic competence is teachable; instruction has a positive effect; and explicit instruction with ample practice opportunities produces the best results. Favorable teacher’s attitude and curriculum-wide approach through actual data are among important aspects that teachers consider when developing students’ pragmatic competence.
