Isi artikelNew fashion in rhetoric has been indicated by the contradiction of it as a result of the recent criticism for its reductionist, deterministic, prescriptive, and essentialist orientation. The term “contrastive rhetoric” appears here to name the new fashion. This implies that there is shuttling and negotiating thought between different speech communities. This article is a report of a study shedding a light on the coherence made by the bilinguals. It is a qualitative study which investigated two Indonesian scholars from different educational and occupational backgrounds. Data were collected and analyzed to develop a descriptive model encompassing all cases of the phenomena taken from the thought patterns as reflected by the participants. Data were collected in two ways: semi-authentic as well as authentic. In terms of being coherent, the finding revealed that the paragraphs in both Indonesian and English letters under study tend to follow two dichotomies of phenomena: (1) being completely coherent and (2) being incoherent. The being completely coherent means that the paragraphs serve two aspects, i.e. logical arrangement and smooth flow. The being incoherent refers to the condition where the paragraphs lack either the logical arrangement or smooth flow. First, in conjunction with the phenomenon of paragraph coherence, the fact that two dichotomies (i.e. being completely coherent and being incoherent) were found in paragraphs of both English and Indonesian letters similarly suggested “rhetorical switches”. Incoherent paragraphs that were usually found in Indonesian letters as one of the characteristics in the non-linear fashion of thought in fact also fulfilled the English letters. On the contrary, coherent paragraphs were obviously seen in both English and Indonesian letters. This implies that addressing ideas in coherent paragraphs was done by the participants regardless of their different languages.
