Isi artikel
Writing is a neglected area of English language teaching (Hedge, 1992:6; Wasilah, 2001:24; and White and Arndt, 1993:1). Writing is perceived as the most difficult skill to acquire by students and to teach by teachers (Smith, 1980:212). Students’ main difficulty, which becomes the problem of the teachers to be handled in teaching writing, is more on their competence than on performance. Performance is the realization or the product of their competence, such as grammatical sentences in a coherent essay, to produce a coherent essay. This study was an attempt to find out what kinds of errors in cohesive markers the students made in their writing; and (2) whether self-editing strategy decreased the students’ errors in using cohesive markers.
