Isi artikelAcademic Writing Subject is offered to students of the English Department, Hasanuddin University in Year 3 (Semester V) of their academic life. This subject can only be taken by the students if they have passed the prerequisite subjects: Writing I and Writing II. The credit point allotted to Writing I and II subjects is twice (4) as many as the credit point allotted to Academic Writing subject (2), as there are many basic writing skills need to be learnt before coming to Academic Writing class to do the writing of academic texts. This paper reports the students’ perceptions of the importance of learning to write academic texts to prepare themselves to write their thesis in semester V that starts September to December 2010. In the first classroom meeting, the students will be asked to write their purpose for taking Academic Writing subject. Their responses will be recorded as the pre-course data. They will be given the syllabus so they are aware of the objectives of the subject and each of the writing activities they will encounter during the semester. Their writing papers will be photocopied and kept by the teacher to monitor their progress in writing academic texts. At the end of the semester, they will then be asked to write their opinion as to whether the academic writing tasks they have done have satisfied the required skills for thesis writing. All the data will be analyzed to uncover the students’ perceptions of the importance of learning to write academic texts to Qualify for Thesis Writing.
